The management of Polytechnic, the constituent college of Malawi University, has resolved to replace MM Security Company which was in charge of providing security services at the institution’s campus.

The development follows Tuesday’s protests by the students who among others accused the security agency of being incompetent after thieves raided the compass and store items that include laptops, cellphones, clothes and money belonging to students.

Some students told the media that in most cases they have been coming across the guards sleeping at night while inline of their duty.

During the protest students went into running battles, which lasted for four hours, with riot police personnel who fired teargas canisters to disperse the protesters, who among others disrupted traffic along Masauko Chimbembere highway.

One of the hostels known as Nyika, also caught fire which is alleged to have been ignited by a tear gas canister thrown by the law enforcers, causing massive damage.

But on Tuesday, Blantyre Police Station deputy spokesperson, Dorah Chathyoka, told the media that investigations were underway to establish the cause of the fire.

The protests forced The Polytechnic management to give students up to 6pm on Tuesday to leave the campus.

In a memorandum to students, the college’s acting registrar, Yamikani Chilinde, said management resolved to close the college due to the fire that destroyed the male residence Nyika Hostel.
