Football Association of Malawi (FAM) says it is closely collaborating with The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) on rescheduling the visit to Malawi of FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, to an earliest convenient date.

The world football governing body’s leader, was scheduled to jet in the country on Wednesday at 2pm through Chileka International Airport but the trip was canceled at eleventh hour due to the ongoing rehabilitation works on the airport main runway which made it not possible for the Jet carrying Infantine and his entourage to land.

Among other tasks he was supposed to inaugurate FIFA’s funded projects, Mpira Stadium and FAM Academy at Mpira Village in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre.

But at around 9 am, FAM, through its General Secretary, Alfred Gunda, issues a statement announcing postponement of the visit by the fifa president.

Reads part of the statement, “The Football Association of Malawi regrets to advise that the visit of the FIFA President Gianni Infantino to Malawi which was scheduled for today Wednesday 27th November 2019 has been postponed until further notice.

“Alternative efforts to have the plane land at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe and use other means to transport the delegation to Blantyre were not successful due to the tight schedule of the FIFA President who was expected to arrive in the country at 2pm and leave at 7pm for Democratic Republic of Congo.”

Among other activities that were supposed to take place during the inaugural ceremony was a ceremonial football match involving both international and local legends like Cameroonian Samuel Eto’o, French Youri Djorkaeff, Malawian Patrick Mabedi and Chancy Gondwe, among others.

On Monday, Infantino met Madagascan President Andry Rajoelina in the country’s capital city Antananarivo, where he visited similar projects.
