Blantyre Press Club led over 200 pupils from Mzama and Chimaliro primary schools in Chigumula in a tree planting exercise around the two schools where 5000 trees were planted.
In an interview with YONECO FM online president for the media club Blessings Kanache said they will continue combating effects of climate change by planting trees across Malawi and they are planning to plant trees in the flood prone area of Chikwawa.
Meanwhile sponsors of the initiative Puma energy through its executive director Dr Davies Lanjesi told YFM that it is impressed with the way the media club is managing funds for the trees saying they are being utilized in the right way.
“We are pleased with the partnership we have we the media club and the funds are being managed well as evidenced by the trees which are bought and distributed.”
Also present at the event was Mayor for Blantyre City Wild Ndipo who commended the media club and Puma energy for partnering in this initiative saying it will curb encroachment of people on governments land.
“This is not the first time the media group has planted trees in the city of Blantyre and as mayor I just would like to appreciate them for complementing government’s efforts on restoring forests.”
