Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has struck a deal with mobile service provider, Telecom Networks Malawi (TNM Plc) on online learning amid coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking at the launch of the initiative in Lilongwe on Tuesday the line minister, William Susuwele Banda said students will be accessing the lesson for free so long as they have a TNM number.
Susuwele Banda said form 1 and 2 students from both private and public schools will be able to access lessons through the ministry’s website www.education.gov.mw at no data cost.
“The contents of form 3 and 4 will be uploaded when the technical team finalizes developing the content,” he said.
Susuwele Banda also revealed that the other online platforms the ministry is working on are in final stages and they include radio, television and print.
He also disclosed that the ministry in collaboration with VSO International will also provide 10,000 tablets starting with an initial 1,000 tablets to primary school learners in rural areas complete with solar charging.
The ministry has again repeated that no school should re-open unless it gives a go ahead.
According to the ministry, about 5.4 million youths, children and adults are currently not learning due to the closure of schools in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.
