Police on Thursday revealed that they have arrested some people in connection with the torching of UTM party offices in Lilongwe.
Deputy national police spokesperson Thomeck Nyaude, confirmed this in an interview with YFM.
However, Nyaude could not divulge more information in regards to those arrested, claiming doing so would jeopardize investigations currently under way.
The arson, which left three members of the Tambala family dead and three children seriously injured, occurred on May 5 this year and is suspected to have been politically motivated.
A social commentator, Lucky Mbewe applauded the Malawi Police Service (MPS) for arresting the suspects saying it is a welcome development.
However Mbewe demanded for a public explanation from the security organ on why it delayed in arresting the suspects.
HeĀ said the police should have treated the case with urgency as three members of Tambala family succumbed to the incident.
“I think they should be answerable to the public why it took them ages to arrest suspects of such serious incident,” he said.
Mbewe has asked the police to be professional and non-partisan when executing their duties to ensure that justice prevails in the country.
