Chancellor College economics professor Ben Kalua has advised all government entities to explore new measures aimed at generating more revenue to ensure a smooth run of their operations.

Kalua said this in reaction to revelation that the Malawi Police Service (MPS) has plans to establish a commercial driving school aimed at generating revenue as well as contribute to road safety by training drivers.

The plan by MPS has been revealed during a meeting between the country’s vice president, Dr. Saulos Chilima, who is also the minister responsible for Public Sector Reforms, and the officials from the Ministry of Homeland Security led by the line minister Richard Chimwendo Banda.

The meeting was one of Dr. Chilima’s routine exercise on the progress of public sector reforms program.

Professor Kalua said the initiative by MPS is commendable.

“Time has come for government entities to start thinking outside the box and explore more new ways of generating revenues to assist in rebooting the economy of the country which has collapsed for the past years,” he said.

Kalua therefore urged all the government departments to borrow a leaf from MPS initiative.

However, the expert has warned that if the initiative comes into operation the authorities should put in place strict measures to ensure that revenues generated should not end up into wrong pockets.
