Electricity Supply Commission of Malawi (Escom) has instituted an investigation into reports of alleged theft of 1.4 million liters of fuel at the power utility.

Escom`s Director of Finance Clement Kanyama has told the Natural Resources and Climate Change Committee of Parliament that the report of its enquiry will be ready in four to eight weeks’ time.

“We should be able to provide a progress report in the next four to eight weeks because of the technical nature of the investigation that is going on, we have had several meetings with Aggreko.

“What we can say at this point is that we are all moving forwards in the right manner to be able to determine and agree on actual fuel that needs to be rebursed but we have not yet reached that far,” explained Kanyama.

Without disclosing who is behind the investigation, Kanyama said the Cooperation is also reviewing the contractual agreement between ESCOM and Aggreko.

“What we can say ESCOM is that responsible for availing the fuel to Aggreko, Aggreko is responsible for providing security to the fuel that has been delivered into their storage tanks.

“So based on the respective responsibilities of these parties, each party has a responsibility to ensure that the correct amounts are accounted for,” said Kanyama.

Recently, Vice President Saulos Chilima was all over the town discussing about the mysterious theft of the 1.4 million liters of fuel at ESCOM.
