A 23-year-old man has died after he was struck by lightning in Nkhata Bay district.

Nkhata Bay police publicist Kondwani James identified the deceased as Derrick Gondwe.

“The incident happened during early hours of Sunday December 13, Derrick slept on the floor in his bedroom while it was raining,” James said.

James further said the incident also left six others injured.

“The lightning also struck six other occupants of other houses around the village who got injured.

“It heavily attacked Derrick who died whilst receiving treatment at Chintheche Rural Hospital while the other six are still receiving treatment,” he said.

Derrick Gondwe hailed from Mfufu Village Traditional Authority Malanda in Nkhata Bay District.

Meanwhile, police in the district has advised members of the general public to be extra careful whenever it’s raining to avoid similar deaths.
