The Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) has temporarily closed its Head Office in Blantyre due to what the Commission has described as prevailing Covid-19 cases among its staff.

According to a letter released and signed by MEC`s Chief Elections Officer Sam Alfandika there are 23 staff members who have tested positive for Coronavirus.

“Currently, 23 members of staff have tested positive to COVID-19. This closure is, therefore, meant to prevent further spread of the Corona Virus among the staff,” said in a statement Alfandika.

Alfandika said the Office will be closed for ten working days.

“The Commission hereby announces temporary closure of its head office in Blantyre for ten (10) working days, from Monday, January 25, to Friday, February 5, 2021,” said the MEC CEO.

He added that all staff will be working from home during this period of closure of the Office.

“Take notice that, in view of this development, all staff will be working from home during this period.

Mandatory Covid-19 tests will be arranged on February 3 and 4, 2021 to enable all staff to check their status before returning to work on February 8, 2021,” reads the statement.
