A grouping of concerned teachers will hold national-wide demonstrations on Friday to force government to provide them Covid-19 risk allowances.

The Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19 announced on Wednesday the reopening of schools on February 22, 2021 following a five-week closure due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Secretary General for the grouping Azizi Losa said they also want government to recruit additional secondary school teachers in order to decongest classrooms.

“We have arranged these demonstrations to show our dissatisfaction with how government has addressed some of the issues that we raised to them such as risk allowances,” he said.

In January the grouping wrote a letter to government to provide learning shelters, tents, risk allowances and disinfect schools once per week and recruit additional teachers.

“Government has only responded to some of the concerns like they have only recruited primary teachers, but they are some secondary schools which also need to be decongested hence the need for more teachers,” he said. 

Minister of Education Agnes NyaLonje communicated that the Ministry will put in place a number of preventive measures to ensure that both students and teachers are protected from Coronavirus.
