Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) and Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to revive netball in the country from the grass root level.

The MoU was signed on Wednesday at a function which took place at Sports Council Offices in Blantyre.

NAM President, Khungukire Matiya, said the cooperation between the two associations is a remarkable sign of a promising future of Netball in the country.

Matiya said: “We can only talk about the future when we begin to work with the grass root. MASSA works at grass root level in primary and secondary schools and this is where we find raw talent which needs to be trained so that they can reach their full potential in as far as the game of netball is concerned.”

She further praised Massa for accepting to work with Nam for the betterment of the sport.

Speaking during the event, Massa President Blackson Kalamula, said sports bodies cannot achieve their goals if they chose to work in isolation.

“MASSA is responsible for the talent in schools which is the grass root level while Nam has technical expertise so if we work together then this can be a big boost to the sport.”

The guest of honour during the event, Ruth Nzengo, who is the Sports Development Manager for the Malawi National Sports Council, said it is sad to see the performance of the country’s National Netball going down recently, a development which she attributed to poor back ground.

She therefore said schools are the biggest foundation to promote sports in the country.

The MoU has been signed on a four year deal but will continue its existence even after the end of its period.
