Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) says its decision to hold demonstrations on April 29, 2021 still stands despite the firing of minister of labour Ken Kandodo and some arrests made so far over Covid-19 6.2 billion funds.

About two days ago, HRDC gave government a seven day ultimatum asking President Lazarus Chakwera to address Malawians on how the funds will be recovered failing which there will be mass protest.

But when speaking to YFM after Chakwera’s address on Sunday, Chairperson for HRDC Gift Trapence said it is too early for the Coalition to call off the demos as it is currently monitoring how things will be unfolding.

“We are still assessing what Chakwera said in his address and we will communicate at a later date our position in regards to the demos but as of now status quo remains the same,” he said.

Trapence however applauded Chakwera for the steps taken against suspected covid-19 funds abusers.

Concurring with this is National Anti-corruption Alliance (NACA) executive director, Moses Mkandawire, who described the arrests as a positive step towards eradication of corruption in government offices.

Meanwhile, president Chakwera has said more audits will follow once the 6.2 billion audit is completed.
