Three people have died following the collapsing of Kyungu Bridge which is near Songwe Border that links this country to Tanzania due to heavy rainfall in Karonga.
Karonga police spokesperson for sub inspector Enock Livason said the deceased include immigration officer Frank Chitimbe, Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) officer Dingiswayo Manyeta and another man who is yet to be identified.
“Another body is yet to be identified,” he said.
Sub inspector Levison also said that businesses and traffic are on standstill as a road remains impassable.
In reaction one of business operators in the country who imports products from neighboring Tanzania, Madalitso Phiri has described the development as a setback.
“I am stranded right now and so is my business. I therefore appeal to government to quickly work on maintaining the bridge,” she said.
Concurring with this is another businessman who imports vehicle Innocent Mweso who has since requested government to quickly find an alternative for road users.
