The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says it has resumed its operations and regular discharge of its constitutional and statutory functions.

MEC’s Chairperson Dr. Chifundo Kachale said this through a statement after the commission was formally notified of the standing order against dismissal of two of its commissioners Linda Kunje and Jean Mathanga.

“The commission has been formally notified that commissioners Linda Kunje and Jean Mathanga applied for and were granted permission to commence judicial review proceedings and an order staying the decision to rescind their appointments as MEC commissioners, hence their decision to resume work,” read part of the statement.

He said this means that things have reverted to what they were prior to the communication from the attorney general, and will be like that until the judicial review process is concluded.

Thus Kachale said they will competently resume the regular discharge of its constitutional and statutory functions and that they will convene a meeting to deliberate and review its calendar of events.

In a related development, MEC’s chief elections Officer Sam Alfandika has resigned on grounds that he is taking up a new position at the United Nations (UN) as an international elections advisor.

MEC said it will look into relevant modalities for filling up the vacancy saying the office plays a critical role in the effective discharge of all duties at all levels.

Alfandika served on the position at a time he presided over the May 21 2019 Tripartite Elections that were riddled by numerous irregularities.
