Ex-Malawi Young Pioneers (MYP) have given government five days to settle down their terminal benefits and compensations over what they call premature retirement. 

The ultimatum follows demonstrations that the ex-MYPs held in Lilongwe as they have petitioned government through Lilongwe City Council expressing their grievances on their outstanding benefits.

But addressing the members at Civic Offices in Lilongwe, Minister of Homeland Security Richard Chimwendo Banda has advised the ex-MPYs to come up with a detailed list of all the members which will be submitted to government.

“I would like to thank you for conducting peaceful demonstrations in the course of expressing your grievances and having made consultations from the Treasury, we have been advised that there is need to compile a list of all those involved.

“We need to have necessary documentation of those who were part of the MYP, this includes name and years of their service, all this will be submitted to Treasury,” said Chimwendo Banda.

In an interview, the Group`s coordinator William Kanyoni said authorities have a period of five days to address their concerns and that they will act in compliance with the Minister`s directive.

“What we want it`s nothing else apart from getting our terminal benefits, compensations and premature retirements which happened on us around 1993 to 1994.

“We have welcomed the gesture by the Minister and we will act accordingly as advised because as far as we are concerned there, we suspected foul play in these processes, we hope this time around things will be done orderly,” said Kanyoni.

In 2019, another group of the ex-MYPs held vigils at Area 18 Tower in Lilongwe in a bit to force authorities to give them their terminal benefits.
