Malawi Police Service (MPS) says it is conducting investigations to establish the circumstances that led to wrist injuries of Yohane Nkoko whose injuries came after he was tightly handcuffed for days in a police cell at Ndirande Police Station a month ago.
On June 12, 2021, MPS issued a press statement informing the general public that investigations on the matter have been instituted.
Speaking to YFM on Wednesday, national police spokesperson, James Kadadzera, said the matter is still under investigation by their Professional Standards Unit (PSU) and the findings will be made public in due course.
Kadadzera said: “Indeed we issued a press statement that we are carrying out investigation on the said matter and now are still waiting for the findings from our Professional Standards Unit who are responsible for the investigations and when the report is out we will let Malawians know.”
Kadadzera also quashed reports that just like other investigations, this one is also taking too long.
“Our investigations don’t take too long however we do the needful by doing thorough investigations because at the end of the day we need to find the bottom truth of the story,” he said.
Kadadzera further downplayed fears that the results of this investigations might luck credibility since the suspects are also the police officers.
On such fears, Kadadzera said there are a number of police officers who were found guilty of different offences and others are currently serving jail terms while others have been disciplined internally hence who ever will be implicated on this matter shall not be exempted.
The injured suspect, who is 35 years old, was arrested on May 10, 2021 on allegations of breaking into the building and theft.
He hails from Mtambalika village, Traditional Authority Kapeni in Blantyre district.
