Government has called on the Malawi Police Service and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services to tighten security in boarder’s and desist from aiding human trafficking.
The call was made during this year’s World Commemoration Day against Trafficking in Persons.
Speaking to YFM, Minister of Homeland Security Richard Chimwendo Banda said it is sad that some men in uniform are perpetrators of human trafficking aiding and shielding human traffickers.
“We commend those men in uniform who are doing a good job on trafficking but there are also some who are aiding these traffickers, let me warn them that the law will not shield them when found,” said Chimwendo Banda.
Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare Dr. Patricia Kaliati called on the citizenry to seek clarification from the ministry when they have been offered a job and education opportunities in other countries in order to not fall victim to human trafficking.
“We are calling on Malawians to please confirm with government when they get a job or education offer from other countries so that we cross check and see if it’s safe for them to go,” said Kaliati.
30th July every year countries commemorate World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.
The day was set aside by the United Nations in 2013 to raise awareness against Human trafficking.
The commemoration this year was held in Mzuzu at Grand Palace Hotel under the theme “Victims’ Voices Lead the Way”.
