A call has gone out to journalists in the country to up their efforts when it comes to informing and educating the masses towards the fight against Trafficking In Persons (TIP).
According to Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Homeland Security Kennedy Nkhoma, journalists have a critical role to play on civic educating Malawians on evils of TIP.
“The journalists would be a mouthpiece of the people of Malawi and the Ministry of Homeland Security in spreading the message which we feel should be used and heard by every person on the evils of TIP,” he said.
“Most of our brothers and sisters around have suffered following the elements trafficking which has been happening so we think journalists should be used to spread the message to the populace the dangers of involving themselves in TIP.”
Nkhoma said much as statistics indicate that the country is registering more cases of TIP the rise can be attributed to strengthening of measures that authorities are embarking on.
“I could simply say if you look at the statistics which we had given it means we are now trying to strengthen the base at which we should protect the people of Malawi,” he said.
“The media, if involved properly, they will add up to what the members of the police and the immigration are doing in curbing the vice.”
Statistics indicate that in 2020 authorities rescued 688 migrants and so far 32 cases have been prosecuted.
