The Parliamentary Legal Affairs Committee on Tuesday will commence a public consultations on the proposed abolition of death penalty in the country.
According to a media statement released by Clerk of Parliament Fiona Kalemba, the development follows adoption of a progress report on the proposed abolition of the death penalty, during the 2022/23 Budget Meeting of the August House.
Reads the statement: “The report sought the mandate of the National Assembly to allow the Legal Affairs Committee carry out public inquiries in order to thoroughly consult and solicit views from the general public on this very important subject matter.
“Before making recommendations to the National Assembly. The Committee will, therefore, hold public inquiries in all the three regions of the country as follows.”
The Committee has further asked Malawians and concerned stakeholders to either make written submissions or attend the inquiry during which they can make oral submissions.
In addition, individuals whose relations were murdered or whose relations were convicted of murder and sentenced to death have been asked for an audience as having vested interest.
In the Central Region, the public inquiry will be conducted in Lilongwe at Parliament Building from Tuesday this week and up North it will be held in Mzuzu on Friday same whilst for Southern Region it will be in Blantyre on May 20, 2022.
