 A 60-year-old Japanese national and a Malawian man have drowned after a boat capsized while on Lake Chilwa.

Zomba police spokesperson Sub Inspector Patricia Sipiliano, has identified the Japanese national as Ichiro Imai, a fisheries sociologist and John Juwawo, a fisheries officer.

Sipiliano said on August 16, 2022, the two went to Chinguma Ngotangota fishing docks to conduct studies but on their way back on August 19, 2022 the boat capsized due to heavy winds.

“Efforts to rescue them were done but the Japanese was found dead and the Malawian went missing,” Sipiliano said.

Marine police officers and officers from the department of fisheries are searching for the missing officer.
