Political Scientists have expressed mixed reactions over sentiments made by President Lazarus Chakwera that his administration has not fulfilled some of the key priority issues due to a consortium of crises.
Chakwera told business executives at the Malawi Investment Summit in Lilongwe on Wednesday that Covid-19 pandemic, storms and power outages have impacted areas that could have created jobs, ensured food security and improved the economy of the country.
In his reaction, University of Malawi political scientist Joseph Chunga agreed with Chakwera by saying these factors have affected several countries in the world including Malawi.
“The most important thing for Malawians to hear and continuously ask for, should be what the government is doing about those things. Is it doing enough to deal with the challenges?” Chunga said.
But University of Livingstonia political scientist George Phiri argued that the problems exposed more opportunities for job creation and wealth creation.
He added that the problem is in the management of finance in the country.
“International Monetary Fund (IMF) for example, provided funds for Covid-19 in the country. But we have heard that the money was stolen and have not been accounted for. So, the problem is not Covid-19 or storms, but management of resources” Phiri replied.
