Opposition to hold govt to account as Parliament returns

Parliament has reconvened in Lilongwe for the seventh meeting of the House in the 49th Session.

According to a communique by Speaker of the House – Catherine Gotani Hara, the five-week meeting will run up to next December 16, 2022.

Reads the communication: “The Office of the Speaker of Parliament wishes to inform all Cabinet Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Members of Parliament and the general public that the Seventh Meeting of the National Assembly in the 49th Session of Parliament will be held from Monday, 14th November to Friday, 16th December 2022 at Parliament Building in Lilongwe.”

Leader of the House Richard Chimwendo Banda said the lawmakers are ready to deliberate on bills and ministerial statements, among other business.

Leader of Opposition in the Parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa said the opposition side is ready to take government to task on a number of social-economic challenges rocking the nation.

Nankhumwa cites the ongoing fuel scarcity, food insecurity and progress on this year’s Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP).
