Members of Parliament (MPs) have raised an alarm over what they call phone spying on their handsets.
First to raise the matter was Machinga East lawmaker Esther Jolobala who stood in the House asking for Speaker’s intervention on suspected spying by unknown individuals.
She said: “We have been wondering what is really happening to our phones, sometimes whenever we are talking to our constituencies, it gets stuck so we started asking each other what is really happening.
“It’s when we discovered that our phones have been forwarded to a certain number so that they should be able to listen to what is it we are discussing.”
Jolobala said most legislators have been experiencing similar occurrence where private conversation on their handsets is being interfered with.
“We tried to call that number using a true caller, and it showed that political forwarded, so we cannot identify the person by name.
“But we are able to see that it indicated that it is political forwarded, so we would like the Minister of Information to come out clearly and explain to Malawians even the MPs,” said Jolobala.
In her determination, Speaker of the House Catherine Gotani Hara has directed Minister of Information to give a ministerial statement on the matter.
