Leader of Opposition in Parliament Dr. George Chaponda has called for the release of a comprehensive report on the passport crisis at the department of Immigration and Citizenship Services.
Chaponda told YFM in an interview on Friday, President Lazarus Chakwera’s address in Parliament last month gave hope that the crisis would be over within a month, but it is unfortunate that the crisis is yet to be solved.
He said the problem which is long overdue is affecting people who are in desperate need of passports.
“We cannot sit and watch when students are losing scholarship opportunities; when patients seeking medical attention outside are failing to travel and others die,” Chaponda said.
He has since asked for a detailed action plan on how government intends to address the backlog of passport applications at the department.
Chaponda also called for transparency in the procurement process for passport materials and services.
