Education rights organisation, Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC) has said it is committed to complementing government’s efforts in improving the quality of education in institutions of higher learning in the country.
CSEC board chairperson, Dr. Limbani Nsapato made the remarks on Tuesday when CSEC, in partnership with United Kingdom-based charity Book Aid International, donated 198 assorted law- based textbooks worth K50 million to the University of Malawi (UNIMA).
Dr. Nsapato said the organization believes in investing in the minds of students for the betterment of the country.
“We have provided this support to the faculty and students so that they have sufficient books for them to be able to study,” he said.
Nsapato said public universities are facing shortages of learning materials due to funding constraints hence they need support.
“The university is facing shortage of books which in turn affects the quality of education,” he said.
Executive Dean of the School of Law, Economics and Governance at UNIMA, Prof Happy Kayuni commended CSEC for donating latest and high-quality books.
“This donation is very important to us because the books are relevant to the modules that we teach in our law programs,” he said.
Prof Kayuni said the donation will also improve the textbook per student ratio at the institution.
“We have few books so with the growing number of students every year, we are glad that this donation will narrow the textbook per student ratio,” he said.
