An 18-year-old man, who was allegedly drunk, drowned while attempting to cross a river in Dowa District on Saturday, police say.

Elias Banda drowned while coming from a traditional dance in Kamtayeni Village.

Dowa Police Station spokesperson Alice Sitima confirmed the incident and said the body was found floating in Themba River following a search by relatives.

“Banda told his friends that he wanted to take a nap, but they advised him not to do so saying the place was not safe,” said Sitima.

“However, ignoring their advice, Banda left the gathering and did not return home.”
