As part of its ongoing refugee response, Youth Net and Counselling (YONECO) has donated non-food items to Mozambican asylum seekers residing at Khope camp in the area of Traditional Authority Mbenje in Nsanje district.
The distributed assorted items include wrappers, soap bars, and used clothes, specifically targeting vulnerable groups.
A total of 120 individuals, including pregnant women, adolescent girls and the elderly have benefitted from the initiative.
Speaking to YFM after the donation, YONECO executive director MacBain Mkandawire described the situation in the seven makeshift camps as dire.
“The asylum seekers are lacking basic needs like shelter, sanitary materials and mosquito nets to protect them from malaria,” Mkandawire said.
Post-election violence in Mozambique has forced over 2700 people to cross into Malawi through Nsanje District.
The violence escalated after the ruling Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo) candidate, Daniel Chapo, was declared the winner of the disputed October 9 presidential election.
