CFTC fines 3 firms for unfair trade practices

The Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) has imposed fines on Friends Investments, Suncrest Creameries, and Namonje Investment for unfair business practices.

Investigations by the commission found Friends Investments guilty of supplying expired products to the market, Suncrest Creameries for supplying a product with a misleading manufacturing date, and Namonje Investment for stocking expired goods.

The commission also found Paramount Holdings Limited guilty of selling substandard fertilizers and has ordered the company to refund a customer who purchased 70 bags of the said fertilizer.

Brenda Bota, Director of Consumer Affairs at the CFTC, stated that those guilty of selling products likely to cause harm or injury will be fined 1% of their annual turnover.

A 1% fine will also be imposed on those engaging in unconscionable conduct, while those who fail to adhere to earlier orders will face a penalty of 10% of their annual turnover.
