MDF deployed to Zomba Mountain to curb illegal logging

Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change, Owen Chomanika, has announced the deployment of Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers to Zomba Mountain as an immediate measure to combat illegal logging and protect natural resources.

Speaking on Monday during a Zomba Plantation stakeholders’ meeting, Chomanika expressed concern over the alarming rate of illegal tree harvesting, which threatens future generations.

He stated that MDF soldiers have been mandated to take action against anyone entering the plantation unlawfully to harvest timber.

As part of the crackdown, the minister has also revoked concession licenses for several stakeholders, including Chivumbe Cooperative, for contributing to the destruction of young trees in the area.

Eastern Region Police Commissioner Chikondi Chingadza condemned the rise in organized crimes linked to deforestation and assured that law enforcement would intensify efforts to protect the mountain.

Senior Chief Mlumbe echoed the minister’s sentiments, acknowledging the severe damage already done to Zomba Plateau.

The traditional leader pledged full support for the ministry’s efforts to restore and protect the plantation.
