The Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare Jean Muonawauza Sendeza has emphasized the urgent need for stronger collaboration between the government, civil society, and international partners to effectively address both gender-based violence (GBV) and the climate crisis.
Speaking at a side event titled “Upstanding is My Superpower: Upscaling Multi-Sectoral Approaches to Ending GBV & the Climate Crisis” during the 69th Commission on the Status of Women in New York, United States of America, Sendeza highlighted the interconnectedness of GBV and climate change, stressing that both crises disproportionately impact women and girls.
Sendeza noted that climate change exacerbates existing vulnerabilities, heightening the risk of GBV due to factors such as displacement, loss of livelihoods, and resource scarcity.
