The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring peace and security in Malawi during this year’s elections.
Fenela Frost, the UNDP’s Resident Representative, made the statement while handing over forensic and ICT equipment to the Malawi Police Service (MPS) at the National Police Headquarters in Lilongwe.
Frost emphasized that the support reflects UNDP’s ongoing efforts to assist Malawi in maintaining a secure environment.
She noted that as crime increasingly becomes more sophisticated through technology, this support is aimed at bolstering the police’s capabilities to combat crime effectively.
Frost also underscored the importance of collaboration, stating that while it is the police’s mandate to ensure free and peaceful elections, citizens and stakeholders must also play an active role in supporting these efforts before, during, and after the elections.
Speaking on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, the Commissioner of Police for Research and Planning, Dennis Chipao, expressed appreciation for the new equipment, noting that it will significantly enhance police investigations.
He added that the equipment will not only speed up investigations but also improve the precision of findings.
Chipao reassured the public that the MPS remains dedicated to maintaining security beyond the election period, citing several key measures already in place to ensure continued safety.
