Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) says it will closely monitor the mandatory mobile SIM card registration exercise to ensure its smooth implementation.
This comes in response to complaints that people from rural areas will have difficulties in registering their cards, due to the long distance that they may have to cover.
Director General for MACRA, Godfrey Itaye said service providers will ensure that everyone should not encounter any challenges during the process.
“It is important that we keep monitoring the registration process in order to make sure that what is supposed to be done is done,” he said.
“As we monitor, we will sit down and look at the progress that has been made, and if need be some changes or decisions will have to be made.”
Itaye emphasized that the mandatory registration of SIM cards will help to solve more cases concerning cyber-crime.
