Civil Society Organisations (CSO’s) in the country have warned government that they will hold national wide demonstrations if it does not respond to their grievances within the given 90 days.
One of the organisers of the April 27, 2018 demonstrations, under the banner of the Malawi Human Rights Defenders Forum, Gift Trapence made the sentiments following government’s decision to start distributing the controversial K4bn in district councils.
He said the distribution process clearly indicates that government is stealing from Malawians.
“The controversial K4bn has got so many loopholes, so if government has started distributing it without responding to our grievances it means it is abusing tax payers money,” he said.
Trapence said if government is not cancelling the distribution process and it does not respond within the 90 days, the results will be another demonstration.
“Malawians should be aware that when the ninety days elapse we will conduct a national demonstration and the preparations are underway,” he said.
On June 6, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Kondwani Nankhumwa announced in a joint meeting with District Commissioners that government has started distributing the controversial K4bn to developmental projects at council level.
During the April 27 national wide demonstrations, Civil Society Organisations (CSO’s) in the country gave President Peter Mutharika an overall 90 days ultimatum to respond to the grievances.
Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Goodall Gondwe maintains that government followed proper procedures on the issue of the K4bn payout.
