Government has been called upon to translate its political will into action in defending the rights of the minorities.

The appeal was made in Lilongwe at the opening of the national stakeholder’s conference on violence and human rights violations against vulnerable minorities including people living with albinism and the elderly.

The conference was organised by the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) in conjunction with the Centre for the Development of People (CEDEP) and Association of Persons with Albinism (APAM).

CHRR Executive Director, Timothy Mtambo said Malawi has not done very well to defend the rights of vulnerable groups though there are laws in place protecting the same

“Malawi is rated highly that means we need to do much. We need to reflect on our strategy to ensure that no one should be killed-no one should be abducted because of the fact that there are different from the rest,” Mtambo told YFM.

In his remarks APAM president Overstone Kondowe said there is need for a genuine commitment in dealing with different human rights violations towards minority groups especially persons with albinism.

“The expectations of all Malawians including persons with albinism themselves was that the National Action Plan will be supported financially by the National Assembly,” Kondowe said.
