Zomba City Council has formally announced plans to turn Zomba State House into a five-star hotel, museum and park.
The city’s Mayor, Christopher Jana, disclosed this during a full council meeting which was held on Friday, where he said government spends millions on the structure which is rarely used.
“This state house is rarely used because the current president is based and operates from Lilongwe, so we are concerned because more resources and tax payers’ money is just wasted, hence we want to make it into use for the country’s benefit,” Jana said.
The mayor further said if the plan materializes it will boost the country’s tourism sector.
“Tourism has proven to be crucial in a country’s development and we are optimistic that this house has the potential of attracting tourists and creating jobs which is key in boosting the country’s economy and development,” he added.
Meanwhile, Jana said they are yet to get feedback from the Office of President and Cabinet on the proposed idea.
