Police in the capital Lilongwe have arrested two prison guards following the escape of four dangerous criminals from Maula Prison.
Confirming the development, Malawi Prison Services spokesperson Smart Maliro said the two have been arrested as part of investigations on the matter.
According to Maliro, they suspect foul play behind the escape arguing that more prisoners could have escaped as the cell holds over 100 inmates.
But Maliro claimed that security for Maula prison remains tight following the incident which happened in the wee hours of Tuesday in Lilongwe.
