The Malawi Police Service has disclosed that 59 people died in road accidents in the Eastern Region from June to August 2017.
Eastern Region Police Spokesperson, Joseph Sauka disclosed that the fatalities were recorded in 77 road accidents.
Sauka however said they recorded a decrease in the number of deaths and accidents in the period under review as compared to the same period last year.
“The number of road accidents decreased by 37.3% as compared to 99 during the same period in 2016. 59 deaths which were recorded represents a decrease of 22.2% as compared to same period in 2016,” he said.
In June this year, the Department of Road Traffic intensified the reinforcement of traffic regulations after the country experienced numerous road accidents that led to loss of many lives.
