The Malawi Enterprise Development Fund (MEDF) says it has planned to start countrywide disbursement of fertilizer loans on October 20, this year.
MEDF Public Relations Officer, Isaac Mbekeani, told YFM online that the loan will be given to famer groups, cooperatives and salaried individuals to help them in the 2017/2018 growing season.
Mbekeyani, said they choose to give out fertilizer because it is the most expensive input in the whole farming process.
He said about 10,000 tons of fertilizer will be distributed to farmers across the country.
“The loan provides that each individual per group gets two to four bags of UREA and 23:21:+ 4S,” he said.
Mbekeyani added: “farmers are going to pay the loan in six months’ equal installments starting from the time they have taken.”
He said MEDF has partnered Small Holder Famers Fertilizer Revolving Fund of Malawi (SFFRFM) to supply the fertilizer on loan to the farmers.
MEDF is a limited company owned by the Government of Malawi.
