Education standards have been greatly affected at Chisi Primary School on Chisi Island in Zomba district due to inadequate resources.
A visit by YFM online at the only primary school on the Island found that a standard eight classroom has been demarcated by pieces of clothing, whereby one side is being used as a classroom and the other by staff members.
The school’s Deputy Head Teacher, Davis Madolo, said the challenges affect the performance of the learners at the school, which was built in 1910.
“The school has only six classrooms, eleven teachers, six teacher’s houses, no desks and no water point,” Madolo added.
“Learners are drinking unsafe water from the lake. Sometimes they draw water from the hospital’s waterhole.”
YFM also found that the school has a two unfinished classroom block which has been under construction since 2013 with funding from Local Development Fund (LDF).
