Food security as well as income generation have been pointed out as some of the major achievements of the Food and Agriculture Organisation FAO-LED project of Strengthening Community Resilience to Climate change in Neno.
The comment has been made by the Assistant Neno District Agriculture Officer (DADO) Noel Mkwapata.
Speaking to YFM online Mkwapata said previously the district used to receive inadequate rainfall due to destruction of trees through charcoal burning, as such farmers could not realise bumper yields leaving their households food insecure.
“Charcoal burning activities brought about changes in the weather pattern and this affected farming activities in the district. The coming in of the project has assisted us to venture into irrigation farming as such most househods are food sufficient,” he said.
In Neno FAO is implementing the project in collaboration with Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) as well as the Government.
