The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has declared its interest to work with YONECOFM as one way of ensuring participation of women and the youth in the 2019 tripartite elections.
This was disclosed during a meeting that was aimed at sharing ideas on how best the two institutions can cooperate to ensure that there is a level media play field in the elections.
MEC Commissioner Elvey Mtafu, expressed satisfaction with how Youth Net and Counselling (YONECO) deals with issues of women and the youth.
Mtafu stressed that this was one of the contributing factors that MEC chose YONECOFM to be part of its stakeholders.
“YONECO is going to help us much because they are dealing much more with the youth and women. You know that the youth are now the biggest number of voters,” she said.
Mtafu disclosed that they have been engaging media houses across the country to partner them in preparation for the 2019 elections.
“We have been going to media houses to help us in the civic and voter education of people in Malawi. We feel these radio people can reach people faster,” she added.
