The Malawi Union of the Blind (MUB) has expressed gratitude to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) for approving it to be one of its stakeholders to provide civic and voter education to the visually impaired citizens.
This has been done as one way of ensuring that the 2019 tripartite elections should be fair to all including those with disabilities.
MUB Executive Director Ezekiel Kumwenda, said they will try to utilize this chance and make sure that challenges faced by the visually impaired citizens during voting are addressed.
“Mostly people with who are visually impaired do not have the right to privacy as each and every citizen so we will make sure that braille materials are available during the voting period,” he said.
Kumwenda added that they are still in talks with MEC to be provided with braille ballot guides for the 2019 elections to ensure privacy of voters who are visually impaired.
