Opposition Members of Parliament have raised fears that the procurement procedures are being flouted at the Electricity Generation Company (EGENCO).
This follows reports that the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) is being highly involved in the procurement of generators and diesel for the EGENCO’ s back up plan for the ongoing energy crisis.
According to Kasungu Central Parliamentarian Amon Nkhata, the Act which is directing the unbundling of ESCOM does not provide that ESCOM should be involved in any procurement for EGENCO.
Nkhata added that he has fears that some corrupt acts might be there.
“If you look in a detailed way in one of the agreements ESCOM is supposed to buy fuel from NOCMA yet we have PIL were they can buy the same fuel at cheaper price and this doesn’t justify ESCOM buying diesel on behalf of EGENCO,” NKhata explained.
But according to Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Goodall Gondwe, EGENCO has followed all the proper procedures in the procurement of the generators.
“We think that between now and end of the year we will see a change in the supply of electricity because the generators are coming and we feel that EGENCO has followed all the proper procedures,” Gondwe said.
