As one way of eliminating Trachoma in Machinga especially to primary school pupils, Heart to Heart Foundation has donated toilets and boreholes in the district worth 79 million kwacha.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Country Representative of the foundation Derlings Phiri, said they believe that the donated infrastructures will bring a good environment for the learners.
Phiri said: “We have donated these ventilated improved latrines and boreholes to improve sanitation and we believe that it will be easy to eliminate Trachoma as it easily spreads on an environment which is very poor.”
Phiri advised the communities surrounding the schools to take care of the infrastructures and take full responsibility of maintaining them.
Speaking on behalf of the District Education Manager, Mary Salimu thanked Heart to Heart Foundation for considering Machinga.
“We are happy that the challenges that we have been encountering are now reduced. We believe that all students who were absconding school because of lack of water will be back to school,” he said.
Heart to Heart Foundation has donated a total of 16 boreholes and 26 ventilated improved toilets in the four educational zones of Namandanje, Ntaja, Nsanama and Nampeya with the help from Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
The foundation is expected to work with the remaining educational zones in 2018 on the same initiative.
