The Malawi Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS) has called on Malawians to donate blood during this rainy season and the upcoming festive period.
Allen Kaombe, MBTS Public Relations Officer, said the demand for blood is high during this period due to high rates of Malaria cases and road accidents.
Kaombe said the organization is currently conducting a blood donation awareness week to sensitize people on the importance of donating blood.
He said the organization hopes to collect enough blood by the end of the week.
“We hope to collect 10,000 units of blood to carter for the months of December and January,’’ he said.
Kaombe highlighted that their target areas of collection becomes limited in the following months.
“Schools will soon go on holiday, so will most employees, hence the need to act now,” he added.
Kaombe further urged Malawians to consider donating blood as it is needed more during the Christmas and New Year festive period which is characterized by road accidents.
The Blood Donation week commenced on November 27 and it will run through Saturday December 2, 2017.
