One of the country’s women’s rights group has thrown its weight behind a proposal to ban handouts during the campaign period.
The comment by Women’s Legal Resources Centre (WOLREC) has come amidst a heated debate on Political Parties Bill at Parliament and amongst Malawians.
In an interview with YFM online ,Project Coordinator for WOLREC Tisungane Irene Ntonga, said if the law takes effect it will assist female aspirants for various political positions to perform well during elections because most female candidates fail to perform well because of financial constraints.
“This is a welcome development and we are in full support of this bill. As advocates of women leaders we feel that this issue has been hindering a lot of women to excel because they have nothing to offer during campaign period,”said Ntonga.
According to Ntonga once the bill is passed into law it will encourage issue based politics.
Recently, Salima Central Parliamentarian,Uladi Mussa argued that handouts are given out of kindness and not to get votes.
