The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services has admitted that deforestation is behind the devastating floods in the country.
The Executive Director for the Department, Jolam Nkhokwe said the country has lost its significant chunk of forests which prevents flooding.
“A lot of trees have been cut down which could have helped in holding the run off during this period as a country is having heavy rains,” Nkhokwe told YFM Online.
He said the country normally receives a lot of rainfall in December.
“The statement which was issued last week showed that the northern region and lakeshore areas are going to experience heavy rains which indeed happened,” he said.
Nkhokwe warned that a similar situation is also going to happen in the southern region.
