Police Commissioner for the Eastern Region has decried poor facility conditions in Victim Support Unit offices as one factor hindering quality service delivery in the country.
The commissioner Martha Suwedi told YFM Online that many offices have single cells for both adults and juvenile suspects which exposes the young offenders to extreme harsh conditions.
“The problem is that room cells are inadequate. In most stations there is no separate room to accommodate juvenile perpetrators, which forces us to mix them with adults,” she explained.
Suwedi added that the situation is really not good for juveniles as it exposes them to more threats and extreme harsh conditions.
She further disclosed that Machinga district does not have a Victim Support Unit Office, a situation she described as not ideal.
“This pushes us to discuss the cases in an open place like under a tree which compromises the privacy and security of the complainant that is supposed to be there,” she added.
Suwedi however asked government and well-wishing stakeholders to intervene and rehabilitate the facilities to ensure maximum quality service delivery.
