President Peter Mutharika has warned Malawians against attacking the elderly in communities on allegation of causing the dry spells through witchcraft.
Mutharika issued the warning on Wednesday during the ground breaking ceremony for 186 kilometer Blantyre by-pass road in Chigumula town-ship.
The Malawi leader said that his government will not spare anyone caught in the act and that justice will take its course.
“It is very sad to hear that in different parts of the country the elderly are being abused in connection to the dry spell,” Mutharika said.
“I want to beg fellow Malawians that only God can control the rains, if one is found abusing the elderly surely you will be sent to jail.”
Recently the country has witnessed some tragic incidents where the elderly have been killed on suspicion that they were causing dry spell through witchcraft acts.
