A drone which was assigned to deriver blood samples to Malawi Blood Transfusion Services (MBTS) has crashed in Lilongwe soon after taking off.
Kanengo Police Public Relations Officer, Sub-Inspector Laban Makalani, said this happened on Wednesday afternoon as the drone was operating within Lilongwe.
“The drone took off at 3 o’clock from the health centre and it crashed after some minutes in the afternoon,” he said.
He also added that, the drone lost attitude when it was flying at about 60 meters above the ground.
The organization implemented a pilot project aimed at ensuring quick delivery of blood samples between area 25 health centre and MBTS offices in Lilongwe.
During the incident no one got injured and the drone was recovered immediately after the incident happened.
The Malawi government together with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) launched the project in June 2017 with the aim of delivering different medical services especially in the remote areas of Malawi.
This was against the background that the country suffers from dangerous flooding and inaccessible roads making the suppliers difficult to ferry in remote areas.
